AI generated ultrasound image showing a thyroid nodule – DALL·E ChatGPT GPT4 OpenAI- December 2023

On December 2023 I asked DALL·E to draw an ultrasound picture scan of a thyroid nodule, and this is the amazing result. Certainly, it’s not the most accurate ultrasound picture of a thyroid nodule, however it will be incredibly interesting to watch the evolution of AI-generated medical pictures. In this way we will probably be able to assess the AI systems “understanding” of what humans will ask them to do concerning medical imaging. If AI will be able to reproduce a medical image of a certain health or pathologic organ, then we could assert that AI has a thorough knowledge of the topic.

Adding to this, it’s crucial to emphasize the importance of accuracy and ethical considerations in medical imaging. As AI continues to evolve, a comparative analysis between AI-generated and real medical images could be invaluable in assessing progress and applicability. Involving medical professionals in this evaluative process can provide critical insights into the practical utility of these images. Furthermore, as we consider the future of AI in medical education and diagnostics, it’s also important to document and understand the limitations and challenges faced by AI in this complex field. A longitudinal study tracking the improvements of AI in medical imaging over time might reveal fascinating trends and benchmarks. Finally, while the potential for educational and diagnostic advancements is immense, we must proceed with a keen awareness of the ethical implications and ensure rigorous validation of AI technology before it’s adopted in clinical settings.
